    Nude drawings

Final work on understanding anatomy, dynamics and staging on the nude model.

Fine pencil and ink sketch of a naked, hunched over person with gentle shadow effects on a white background.
A pencil sketch showing the upper body of the lying man and his closed eyes with hatching for light and shadow.
A minimalist pencil sketch of a male figure in the side view, which places the focus on the curve of the hips and of the buttocks.
Pencil and ink sketch of a young man thoughtfully resting his head on his arm.
A full-body pencil sketch of a standing male nude figure in the three-quarter view from behind.
    • Pose Sketches & EfficiencyShort-term sketches in minutes that quickly capture poses, weight distribution and silhouettes.
    • Selective perceptionFocus on targeted anatomical accents and exciting image details.

    Initial situation

    Aim of the training module

Understanding of human anatomy in order to recognize and avoid typical inconsistencies in biomechanics.

Anatomical Mistakes in Pop Culture: Mega Man, Box Art (US/EU 1987) Captain America, vol.2 #2 (1996) Detroit Metal City, Episode 9 (2008)

A colorful retro sci-fi illustration of a warrior in blue and yellow armor, whose body proportions and leg position appear anatomically severely distorted and incorrect.
A comic illustration of Captain America in profile, whose ribcage and shoulder muscles are drawn in extremely unnatural, massively exaggerated and anatomically incorrect proportions.
Anime illustration of a man in a black shirt and red pants whose body appears extremely compressed and anatomically disproportionate due to incorrect perspective.

    Architectural basics

    The human canon

Analysis of standard proportions and their deviations (athletic, pyknic or leptosome body types).

Pencil sketch of a proportions canon on squared paper: on the left the stretched mass of an adult, on the right the changed proportions of a child.
Pencil sketch on squared paper depicting a human figure in basic geometric shapes and cuboids as proportions scheme (canon).

    Element Studies

Detailed drawings of joints, muscles and individual body parts to penetrate mechanical structures.

Anatomical pencil sketch of the upper back from behind, with the deltoid muscle at the shoulders highlighted and labeled in green on both sides.
Pencil sketch on paper showing a simplified, geometric construction of the human pelvis in the space with guide lines.

    Volume analysis

Abstraction of organic shapes into basic geometric bodies in order to correctly represent light and spatial depth.

Pencil sketch of seated woman's legs with shoes, in which geometric shapes are drawn at the knee and labeled by hand.
Rough pencil sketch of a standing figure from behind, with one foot placed on a chair.

    Training & Focus

Targeted exercises for quickly grasping and implementing poses with changing short-term pose models from the class.

Ink sketch from a drawing class where students sit in a circle and sketch classmates posing in the center.
Quick pencil sketch of a standing, slim human figure with focus on the dynamic posture and first axis lines.
Quick pencil sketch of a man with hat and glasses in the three-quarter view from behind, dressed in a t-shirt and shorts.
